One of the key features of global economic governance in a new multipolar world is the need for more balanced global growth. The world economy is still experiencing significant imbalances, which risk undermining a sustainable economic recovery. With the current system of global economic governance suffering from serious weaknesses, there is a need for a fundamental restructuring that includes more coordinated economic policies with a more balanced representation of all the global economic actors. To this end, a careful analysis of the institutional settings and of the world productive and financial structures must be undertaken.

The Initiative for Policy Dialogue (IPD) in partnership with the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) will host a one and a half day conference on the important subject of Global Economic Governance with special attention to institutional issues, trade and finance, taking place October 7-8 at the Brookings Institution in Washington DC just before the next IMF/World Bank meeting.

Private Event:

October 7th 2:00-6:30pm and October 8th 9am-1:30pm

For the private event (invitation only), the discussion sessions with participants and panelists will be prefaced by an opening and welcome address by Ernst Stetter, Secretary General of FEPS, and Stephany Griffith-Jones, Financial Markets Program Director for IPD; as well as keynote speeches by Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, former Prime Minister of Denmark and current President of the Party of European Socialists; and Joseph Stiglitz, IPD Co-President and 2001 Nobel Prize winner.

Public Event:

October 8th, 2:30-4pm

For the public event, a press conference and public panel introduced and moderated by Brookings Senior Fellow Domenico Lombardi will be held to continue the conversation. Panelists include Joseph Stiglitz, co-president of the Initiative for Policy Dialogue at Columbia University; Massimo D’Alema, former Prime Minister of Italy and current President of the Foundation for European Progressive Studies; Justin Lin, Chief Economist and Senior Vice President of the World Bank; Pascal Lamy, Director-General of the World Trade Organization; and Jomo Kwame Sundaram, Assistant Secretary-General for economic development of the United Nations. After the program, panelists will take audience questions.

*Registration for the public event is now closed
